December 2019 Member Spotlight - Amanda Hilton
Tell us a little about you, your job, family, hobbies, etc...
I have worked at BKD CPAs & Advisors National Office for the past year as part of the Digital Marketing & Communications Team. Before that, I worked for the Girls Scouts of the Missouri Heartland for five years and at CoxHealth Fitness Centers, The Meyer Center for nine years. I have always had a passion for creativity and building relationships, so everything I do revolves around those two things.
I have my Master’s degree in Integrated Marketing/Organizational Comm and a Bachelor’s degree in PR/AD, Design Arts and Global Studies. Springfield, Missouri has always been my home. I am an only child and my mother is the only family I have; thus, we are very close & it’s something I treasure. I am a huge animal lover and have two small dogs who are my world; a miniature beagle, Millie, and a long-haired chihuahua, Jinger. My hobbies revolve around fitness – outdoor activities, running, yoga – art and the experiences I have. I’m also a huge Disney fan & always will be (dream job – Disney!). My first marathon had to be in Disney, it was amazing, because I finished! And because it was such a great atmosphere! Fun fact, my “real” birthday only comes every four years (each election year) because I was born on Leap Year.
How long you’ve been with LPYF and what made you join?
I joined LPYF five years ago when the founder first started the studio in 2015. I was going through a life-altering time and I felt lost. I was looking for a way to get back to myself and the things I loved most. I started on a free week and joined right after. The whole experience then,and now, was very welcoming, caring and therapeutic. I always feel at home when I’m there, and the studio really cares about their members. Bonus – the variety of classes!
Short and long term fitness/health goals: I just strive to live each day as best I can. My dedication to my health pushes me to the studio every day, M-F, and sometimes Saturday. I feel 100% alive after I’ve completed any of my workout classes. I take two classes a night. Straight from work to the studio. I’m grateful that my situation allows that luxury. In the long-run, I hope to continue improving on my yoga practice, strength, and to make myself and health (mind & body) a priority, always. That hasn’t always been the case, and it’s easy to forget.
Where do you find your motivation?
First, continue reminding myself that it’s my life and I must live it, my way. Second, is the feeling I get after I have accomplished a run or completed a workout class. I feel so much better inside and out (even when I can’t walk b/c I did 100 squats the night before). I don’t feel as sluggish. I feel my body changing. I feel the strength I’ve gained. And third, keeping my pain and anxiety at bay. I’ve had a lot of injuries throughout my life and staying active gives my body the strength to handle it. Anxiety is a natural part of life. Being dedicated to my fitness goals relays hope and is a natural mood booster!
What are your favorite fitness activity and your least favorite?
Favorite – used to be running but my body doesn’t allow me to do that as rigorously anymore, so now Yoga has taken the reins. It stretches, everything, allows you to focus and forget about everything else, and builds strength. I always sleep much better after. Least favorite – BURPEES. I swear I’ll pass out one of these days!
One piece of advice you would offer someone regarding nutrition or exercise that you’ve found helped you: “Don’t compare your practice to someone else’s.” I find this mantra repeating itself every time I feel down or frustrated about my body. Society is tough on the image, and it’s hard not to beat yourself up, but when I workout or do Yoga, it has become so simple for me to drop all those thoughts racing around in my head. Sometimes we find it hard to live in the moment and just appreciate it. My fitness dedication to myself is an escape. And it really is true, no one’s practice is ever the same. I find comfort in that, and know that what I’m doing is enough, in that moment.
For Fun, what is your favorite place you’ve ever been and why?
I have enjoyed visiting many places all over the U.S., starting with the kick-off to my annual mother-daughter trips in 1995. It fell at the time I had just lost my dad and my mom wanted to start something that just her and I could always share. It was the first vacation I ever took, to Walt Disney World. Our trips became a tradition, and the first will always be my favorite regardless where I continue to travel in the future.
